New to Canada and need a little help? Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program is a friendly place for newcomer women who have young children to improve their English language skills. At ESL, you learn the language you need to take care of your family. The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg’s ESL program is only for women who need childminding in order to attend class. Childminding gives children a chance to socialize, learn English and develop skills that will help them get ready for school. Once you no longer need child minding, you will be referred to another ESL program.

Taught by certified ESL instructors, the ESL program will help you learn English to do everyday tasks like talking to others, buying food and asking for help. You will also learn about family health and safety, schools in Canada, shopping, banking and paying bills, newcomer services in Manitoba, and Canada and Canada’s culture. To join the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg’s ESL program, you must first go to the Winnipeg English Language Assessment and Referral Centre (WELARC). WELARC will give you a test that helps place you into the correct English language program.
