NEW YORK CITY New York City is in reality a collection of many neighborhoods scattered among the city’s five boroughs, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. While Manhattan and Staten Island are islands, Brooklyn and Queens are geographically part of Long Island, and the Bronx is attached to the US mainland. The islands are linked by bridges, tunnels, and ferries. For the past two centuries, New York has been the largest and wealthiest American city. It’s an architectural marvel with many historic monuments, impressive buildings, and countless magnificent skyscrapers. Besides the architectural delights, New York is an urban jungle that has everything to offer to visitors. The city is home to numerous museums, parks, trendy neighborhoods, and shopping streets. It’s the most ethnically diverse, religiously varied, commercially driven, famously congested, and the most attractive urban center in the USA. New York has more Jews than Tel Aviv, more Irish than Dublin, more Italians than Naples, and more Puerto Ricans than San Juan. ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY Our New York City summer program is hosted at St. John’s University during the months of July and August. Founded in 1870, St. John’s is a Catholic and Vincentian university. Its campus encompasses over 100 acres located in a quiet, safe residential neighborhood in one of the five boroughs that make up New York City. The University lies within easy reach of Manhattan, accessible by all public transportation, allowing our students access to the vast cultural, educational, and commercial resources this magnificent city has to offer. St. John’s campus features broad lawns, handsome stone buildings and ultramodern student residence halls. Facilities include high-tech laboratory and classroom buildings, and state-of-the-art facilities for students. RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION Our dorms at St. John’s are typically suite style apartments with single and double occupancy. There is 24/7 security, washers & dryers, microwaves, apartment refrigerators, as well as free Wi-Fi. Our students enjoy many dining and catering options at the recently renovated Dining Hall. Meal plans include all-you-can-eat buffet style dining.

New York Language Center uses a practical approach to teaching our students English. Our highly conversational classes emphasize oral fluency as a major goal. From the very first class at even the basic level, students will use in a practical and realistic way. We believe that the ability to ask questions is a critical skill and we encourage active participation and natural production of language forms. In order to learn English, the language must become spontaneous. All classes include realistic practice in real life situations. Translation is not allowed. Many students who have studied English in their home countries know the language passively but cannot use it. We try to break the barrier. Our instructors have specific goals for each week. These goals encompass what students can do at the end of the lesson. Oral and written assessments allow students to gauge their achievements.
