The city of Towson is located in the state of Maryland. The first people in the area were likely the Susquehannough people who were known to hunt in this region in the 1600s. The city was not settled until 1752 when two brothers from Pennsylvania, William and Thomas Towson, who moved to the area to farm. From these humble beginnings, the town grew to an important stopping point for farmers bringing livestock and produce to the port of Baltimore. Today the town is home to both Towson University, a public school and Goucher College, a small, private liberal arts school. Students enrolled in English school in Towson should make time to visit the Hampton Historical Site. It gives visitors the chance to tour an actual plantation including the mansion, the overseer’s house, slave quarters, the barn, a dairy and a grave yard. There are several shopping centers in the area, including the Towson Town Center Mall for some upscale shopping and dining options. For those looking for some outdoor activities, there are a number of golf courses in the area. Because of the student population the nightlife in the area is fairly diverse and active. Students taking English courses in Towson will find that there are many places where students enjoy hanging out with friends, playing billiards, dancing or listening to live music. Visitors to Towson can expect to experience hot and humid summers with temperatures regularly reaching into the 90s during July and August. The winters are considered fairly mild, but will have occasional snow falls and freezing rain.
