Torrance is located Southern California in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. The area that now comprises Torrance was originally part of the Tongva Native American homeland. In the early 1900s, Jared Sidney Torrance and a group of investors purchased part of an old Spanish land grant and hired Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to help create a new planned community. Olmsted’s father, Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. was one of the co-designers of New York’s Central Park. The town of Torrance was founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1921. Students enrolled in English school in Torrance will enjoy the city’s close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. There are a number of public beaches both in Torrance and neighboring cities, where visitors can relax, roller skate, bike, surf or just enjoy the sun. The climate in Torrance is considered Mediterranean with dry summers and very mild winters. Visitors will notice that the southern California coastline sometimes has overcast or foggy mornings in the late spring and early summer, which typically turns to sunshine by the afternoon. Because of the extensive network of freeways in the Los Angeles basin, visitors too Torrance can take advantage of many nearby attractions including a wide range of amusement parks and museums. Students taking English courses in Torrance will find that the city has a very diverse, multi-cultural population. This diversity can easily be explored at the Torrance Farmer’s Market where patrons might find food from a variety of cultures including Greek, Chinese and Thai.
