Marylhurst is located in the northern portion of the state of Oregon, just eight miles south of Portland. It is an unincorporated community and home to Marylhurst University. The community was formed when a group of Catholic women, Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, came to the area in 1908. They were striving to bring education to the women of the northwest. They bought land near Lake Oswego and named the area Marylhurst which translates to Mary’s Woods. They moved their college from Portland to the area that is now Marylhurst, and renamed the college to Marylhurst University. To learn more about these women, be sure to visit the Holy Names Heritage Center on the university campus. Students enrolled in English school in Marylhurst will enjoy the location, just 10 minutes south of Portland. Visit the Portland Museum to learn about the area’s origins, to see native arts, and view other interesting collections. Spend time exploring the town of Lake Oswego, where visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the Willamette River while they ride the historic shore trolley. Venture into Portland for shopping, dining and interesting nightlife. Students taking English courses in Marylhurst should try to catch the Portland Rose Festival if they are in town during the month of June. It is held annually and offers carnival rides, dragon boat races and more.
