Jackson Heights is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is believed to be the first garden city community built in the United States. This planned community has many private parks typically hidden from view because of the buildings around them. Students enrolled in English school in Jackson Heights might enjoy taking a historic weekend tour. The Jackson Heights Beautification Group conducts tours during the month of June. These tours include a self-guided tour of the private parks/gardens, and an escorted tour of the historic district. There are also other tours that are led through the area at different times of the year. Some of them involve sampling a variety of the local cuisine. The population in Jackson Heights is very diverse with primarily Columbian, Latino, South Asians and a section called Little India. This makes it one of the best places to get authentic Indian food in New York City. Students taking English courses in Jackson Heights should be sure to explore the neighborhood shops where they might find a variety of items representative of the local population. Visitors will find South Asian jewelry, carved furniture, saris, Indian instruments and more. With the available public transportation, visitors can easily venture outside of Queens to explore more of New York City. Consider catching a show on Broadway, or visiting iconic Times Square.
