The city of Ames is located in the central portion of the state of Iowa. It is approximately 30 miles north of the city of Des Moines. Ames is the home to Iowa State University of Science and Technology. The city of Ames was founded in 1864 as a railroad station stop. Visit one of the many local museums or historic sites to get a feel for the area. Consider a trip to The Farm House Museum. It contains a collection of 19th and early 20th century decorative arts, furnishings and other artifacts representing both the University and the state.
