"I found it a bit difficult."

Francesco Aquilino, student from Italy

It was my first international experience and as I attended the English course alone without any Italian classmate the first days was not easy. However I liked the teachers and location. What I didn't like with respect to the activities proposed daily held every afternoon was most of the time it is not followed and often changed.

"It was okay."

Marcel Reber, student from Switzerland

I had been in Bornemouth about 15 years ago and it was great at Beet Language Center! I finished studying there at "pre Intermediate" level.

After such a long time, I got in a class at upper intermediate level! I really didn't enjoy the global English lessons because I couldn’t follow them at Mayflower College. The problem was my vocabulary; there were too much words I didn't understand.

Another "problem" was an Italian guy in the class who talked, talked, talked and talked – and because of his speed in talking, it seemed to sound very good, but he also made mistakes just like the rest of the students.

Only one teacher started to really correct a lot of rubbish he (and of course we) made in talking! Unfortunately, I met this teacher at the second to the last day.

In general the teachers were good. My main problem was the level which was not appropriate for me.

I enjoyed the afternoon lessons about the aviation English, because I knew what we were talking about.

Dear Marcel

Thank you for sharing your comments and we’re really sorry that the time you spent with us at Mayflower did not meet your expectations.

We pride ourselves on our customer service and aim to treat each student as an individual, balancing your level, needs and expectations to create a valuable and memorable learning experience.

Let’s take a close look at your comments and see how we could have helped you better; it seems you feel that you were not allocated into the correct level class. Your placement test indicated a borderline score between 2 levels and after talking with you, the teacher felt the higher level was more appropriate for you to ensure progression over the 2 week period. With regard to the weekly tests, you scored within an acceptable range for working at this level. The teachers did mention that you had raised concerns about the level being too high for you, but felt that they could offer you sufficient support in the class as the lower level would have been too easy for you. With hindsight, we could have given you a chance to try this class and we’re sorry that we did not respond more pro-actively!

With regard to your over enthusiastic colleague – in any class there is always a mix of personalities and it should be the teacher’s job to ensure that everyone gets the chance to talk. It is sometimes difficult to control this and there is always a fine balance between encouraging fluency (i.e. building confidence) alongside error correction and sensitivity, so sorry we didn’t address this in the correct way for you.

Marcel – it was great to have you at Mayflower and we hope that if you decide to come again, next time we can make the experience at Mayflower a better one for you!

Best wishes

Jill & Steve
