Santander is the capital and the largest city in the province of Cantabria, located on the north coast of Spain. With great football, seafood, restaurants and beaches, it is a great place for travelers and students wanting to study at a Spanish school in Santander. Unfortunately, Santander was ravaged by flames in the Great Fire of 1941 which destroyed much of the city's historic medieval downtown. Remnants of the historic buildings still remain around the city, and this lovely little port town is still as vibrant as ever, with a bustling city filled with lots of shops and restaurants and wide boulevards, a busy waterfront promenade, and scenic plazas. The town of Santander was also the summer home of King Alfonso XIII during the early 1900s. Alfonso built the Palacio de la Magdalena as the residence of the royal family, which travelers can still enjoy visiting today. Students studying Spanish courses in Santander will find plenty of other international students along with friendly locals to practice their new language skills with.
