Granada is located in western Nicaragua, on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua. It was founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It is the oldest city to have been established on the mainland during the time of the Spanish conquests. Granada has a complex history. Through the years, Granada has been a participant or a victim of many military battles and has even been attacked by pirates. Today, students taking Spanish courses in Granada can enjoy visiting a variety of the colonial buildings and churches still beautifying the city with their architecture. Climb the towers of the La Merced church to get a great view of the city. Be sure to visit the central park, and sample some of the local cuisine from one of the street vendors. Try their famous Vigoron, a traditional dish made of chopped cabbage, tomatoes, onions and chile with boiled yucca and fried pork, wrapped in plantain. Not far from the central park, visit the beautiful and striking blue San Francisco Church. Granada has many eye catching historical buildings to explore. Students should also make sure to explore the many popular activities centered around the waterfront area by Lake Nicaragua. It is the tenth largest fresh water lake in the world.
