Homestays are carefully selected and offer students the opportunity to learn more about the local culture in a comfortable setting while studying English in Cape Town. These homes are often between 10 - 20 minutes away from the school by public transport. Families usually offer affordable meal plans that allow you to sample the local cuisine. If you have special requests or diet restrictions (because of religion or health reasons), please let us know in advance. Your housing starts on the Sunday before your first day of class and ends on the Saturday after your last day of class, unless otherwise noted. Learn more about homestay housing
South African host-families are well known for their friendliness and hospitality. Your “host-family” could be a single woman, an older couple or a young couple with children. Either way, staying with a family will give you a unique insight into the South African lifestyle. In Newlands, Good Hope Studies is the only major English Language school. We therefore have a large number of high quality families available. In the city centre, the number of good quality families is limited. Late bookings might therefore result in longer travel times. You may book a single or double room and your family will supply you with breakfast and dinner. Travel distance to both schools is very short, with only a few families living as far as 45 minutes from the school. In the southern suburbs, all host-families stay in private houses with gardens, while in the city centre most stay in apartments.
Student residences are more suitable for an independent student, who is looking for clean, basic accommodation at an economic price. All students must be 17 - 35. Your housing starts on the Sunday before your first day of class and ends on the Saturday after your last day of class, unless otherwise noted. Student residences often do not include any meal plan. Being the most affordable form of accommodation, it is usually the choice of our younger, long-term students (minimum 4 weeks). The Student House is a private house in an upmarket residential area. It is a very inexpensive form of accommodation, ideal for long-term students. This self-catering accommodation consists of rooms with 2 single beds and 2 bunk beds. There are 4 bathrooms to share, a communal kitchen, a dining room, a lounge and a beautiful garden with a swimming pool. The main shopping areas for the southern suburbs as well as restaurants, pubs, etc. are within walking distance.
If you prefer to be independent, want to mix with other students, socialise easily and want to practise your newly acquired knowledge of English at a bar rather than with a host family, then this is for you. While the Campus Accommodation and the Student/Volunteer House only offer shared rooms, our Student Residence features single rooms only. The Student Residence is ideal for the 17 to 25 age group. Each room is equipped with a single bed, a washing basin, a desk and a wardrobe. There is also a safe in each room. Students can relax in the lounge area or watch TV or DVDs. There is also a fully-equipped kitchen for self-catering, with a stove, a fridge, a microwave and a toaster. WiFi is available at an extra charge. The Student Residence is situated in the suburb of Observatory. This is a lively suburb with many young people, and there are lots of trendy bars and restaurants close to the residence. The nearest MetroRail station is very close and it only takes a few stations to reach either of our two campuses.
Newlands Campus accommodation is situated right next to the school in Newlands. It is an upmarket house on a large property with a garden, a swimming pool and a veranda. The campus accommodation is beautifully decorated and there is a self-catering kitchen and a large communal area. Clive and Leslie stay on the property permanently. They are available if you need any help and they also organise communal cooking sessions on some evenings. Participation is optional and students cover the cost of their own food. Each bedroom accommodates between 3 and 4 students and is equipped with desks, chairs and a wardrobe. A total of 3 bathrooms are available to share. There is a large kitchen for self-catering, large common areas, a garden and a pool. Wifi is available free of charge. The campus accommodation is situated in an upmarket residential area. The closest MetroRail station can be reached within a few minutes’ walk. The main shopping areas for the Southern Suburbs campus as well as restaurants, pubs, banks, bars, etc. are also within walking distance. Please also see the map for the Newlands campus location.
We cannot apply for visas on behalf of students. However, the school can supply you with all the documentation you need to support your visa application.
Your letter of acceptance will be sent to your home address by regular mail at no charge to you.
