Riga is the capital of Latvia. The largest city in the Baltic States, it is a true melting pot, with diverse inhabitants including those of German, Russian, Polish and Latvian descent. This city had its earliest beginning as a trading site during the early Middle Ages. Riga rests on flat plane divided by the Daugava River. Students attending Russian schools in Riga will be treated to a stunning display of art nouveau architecture throughout Riga. This style was particularly popular at the turn of the 20th century, which coincides with much of the growth in Riga. Students can see great contrasts in the cobblestone streets in Old Town, and the glass high rises in the newer part of town.
