The Tuscan city of Pisa is located in Central Italy. It is the capital city of the Province of Pisa. This city, with its history dating back to approximately 1000 BC, was once an important naval base. Students enrolled in Italian school in Pisa are surely aware of the famous leaning tower, but may not be aware that this city also is the home to many other historical sites. Adjacent to the Leaning Tower, be sure to visit Pisa’s cathedral and Baptistery, both beautiful architecturally, inside and out. The National Museum of St. Matthew houses an impressive collection of painting from the 12th and 18th centuries, as well as a variety of sculptures. For those wanting to get a great view of the entire city, try visiting the lesser known Old Citadel and Guelph Tower. Pisa is located at the junction of two rivers, the Arno and the Serchio. It is truly a university town, with a high population of students. Students taking Italian courses in Pisa will enjoy exploring its medieval center to enjoy the various restaurants, but might also enjoy shopping at its unique vegetable market. Visitors might also enjoy a stroll through the oldest botanic garden in Europe, or one of Pisa’s many other parks and gardens.
