Visitors to the northern coast of Sicily will find Milazzo on the eastern side of the peninsula called Capo di Milazzo. Through its history, several civilizations have settled in the spot that is now Milazzo. References in Homer’s Odyssey have Milazzo as the place where Ulysses is shipwrecked and meets Polyphemus. Over its history, the city of Milazzo has found itself frequently in the midst of battles, due to its obvious strategic location. Today the city still holds remnants of those times in many of its structures. Students enrolled in Italian school in Milazzo should be sure to visit the Milazzo Castle. It is considered a national monument of Italy and is located in the heart of old town. It houses several ancient structures including the Duomo Vecchio (old cathedral) and is a popular stopping point for many visitors.
