Rambouillet is located in north central France, in the suburbs of Paris. Lying on the edge of the Forest of Rambouillet which is known for its many trails that visitors love to explore on foot, bicycle or horseback, the town is just 30 minutes from Paris. The centerpiece of the town is its castle, Chateau de Rambouillet, a former medieval fortress that eventually was used as a royal residence. Students enrolled in French school in Rambouillet might like to explore the castle and its grounds to learn of the history of this area. Most of the castle dates back to the early 18th century, but one tower remains that was originally part of a fortified castle that stood on the site during the 14th century. Inside visitors can find the Marble Hall dating back to the Renaissance and Napoleon’s bathroom, decorated with beautiful frescoes. Stretching behind the castle is an extensive park complete with a small lake. It is the site of the Queen’s Dairy, built for Marie Antoinette. A retreat that she is said to retire too when the demands of her royal life became to overwhelming. Students taking French courses in Rambouillet will feel as though they have stepped back in time while visiting the castle and its outlying buildings. Another interesting attraction for those staying in Rambouillet is the Rambolitrain Museum. It houses more than 4000 miniature train models traversing over 400 meters of track and is truly a unique experience. Its ideal location and unique setting makes Rambouillet an excellent choice for students wanting to experience many aspects of the French culture.
