Monte Carlo literally means Mount Charles. The city was named after Charles III of Monaco and was founded in 1866. Known primarily for its famous casino, this city has a history that dates back for centuries. As far back as 43 BC it is thought that Julius Caesar used this port. Monaco is the second smallest independent nation in the world, and the city of Monte Carlo itself is similarly very small. Only three kilometers long, it will not take visitors long to explore the city from end to end.
