Chamonix is located in the north western part of the French Alps. It is only 15 kilometers from the Swiss border. This popular winter sports resort is sometimes called Chamonix Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc is the highest European mountain west of Russia, and Chamonix was the home of the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924.
