Stillwater is a city located in Minnesota right across the St. Croix River from Wisconsin. It is just 20 miles east of downtown St. Paul. It is one of Minnesota’s oldest town, and was originally settled because of the draw of the river and the abundant lumber. It was incorporated as a city in March of 1854. Some refer to this city as the birthplace of Minnesota. The historic downtown area is a great place for visitors to explore for its antique shops, used book stores and restaurants. Students enrolled in English school in Stillwater might enjoy Lumberjack Days if they are in town during the summer. It is an annual event that incorporates lumberjack shows, live music, fireworks and other festivities, all celebrating the areas heritage. There is also a vintage baseball game as part of the celebration. Students taking English courses in Stillwater might enjoy spending time on the St. Croix River. Try a lunch or dinner cruise aboard a paddlewheel riverboat, or rent a boat for an afternoon of fishing. Historic Lowell Park is another great option. It is east of the central business district and offers an amazing view of both the river and the Stillwater Lift Bridge. The park is the host for Lumberjack days as well as other events throughout the year including the fall arts fairs. The park has good fishing spots and areas for picnics as well. The climate in Minnesota is known for its extremes, with very cold winters and hot summers, so visitors should come prepared.
