The city of Ruston is located in northern Louisiana and is home to Louisiana Tech University. The growth of the city seems to have an historical relationship with transportation, first due to its position on railroad lines and later due to its position on the interstate highway. Students enrolled in English school in Ruston should be sure to visit the downtown Historic District to get a feel for Ruston’s roots. Many of the buildings are registered on the National Register of Historic Places. This renovated and restored area is now home to a variety of unique shops and restaurants. For those looking for some quality outdoor time, be sure to visit Lincoln Parish Park. It has a 30 acre lake where visitors can swim, fish and boat. It also has camping sites, mountain bike trails, picnic areas and a sandy beach for visitors to enjoy. Students taking English courses in Ruston should be sure to sample some of the local cuisine. In Ruston it tends more towards traditional Southern cooking, but there are also restaurants with that Louisiana Cajun flavor as well. Because of the local college, there is an active nightlife with some venues offering live music and dancing, while others draw a crowd with billiard tables and big screen TVs. For those lucky enough to be in Ruston over the summer, be sure to visit the Louisiana Peach Festival. It’s held annually over the 4th weekend in June and offers good food, live entertainment, lots of vendors and artisans, a parade, a rodeo, a tennis tournament and more.
