Rolla is located in Missouri, half way between the cities of St. Louis and Springfield. The first non-native settlers to the area arrived in the early 1800s. John Webber is credited with building the first house in the area that is now the city of Rolla. Rolla officially became a town in 1858. Throughout its history, Rolla has been a transportation and trade center due to its location on a major railway route later, on historic Route 66. Students enrolled in English school in Rolla might be interested to know that the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy was founded in Rolla in 1870 due to the areas wealth of minerals. Even today, the school is respected as one of the best engineering schools in the world. Visitors to Rolla might enjoy spending some time at Lions Club Park. Complete with a large soccer complex, hiking and biking trails and a stocked lake, the park also plays host to the Annual Lions Club Carnival complete with food, games and rides. Students taking English courses in Rolla should be sure to check out the Rolla Farmers’ Market for some good deals on local products from local vendors. It is open in the downtown area every year from May through October, with the slogan ‘Homegrown and Homemade’. Another fun summer festival is the Route 66 Summerfest. It is held annually, the first weekend of June. With food vendors, entertainment, a classic car parade, a craft festival and more, the Summerfest is a fun event for all.
