Port Elizabeth is one of the largest cities in South Africa. It sits in the Eastern Cape Province. Common nicknames for Port Elizabeth are PE, ‘The Friendly City’ and ‘The Windy City’. It was founded in as a town in 1820, but has likely had inhabitants in the area for thousands and thousands of years. The first Europeans to the area were Portuguese explorers. Students enrolled in English school in Port Elizabeth might enjoy visiting one or more of the various museums found in the city. Visitors can learn about the area’s history, its native animals and also ocean animals in the area. A visit to the African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary is another interesting excursion.
