Derry, sometimes referred to as Londonderry, is the second largest city in Northern Ireland. The city center is still surrounded by the old city walls, some of the best preserved in all of Ireland. Derry is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Ireland with history showing that a monastery was constructed there in the 6th century. Students enrolled in English school in Derry should be sure to visit the Tower Museum. It is located inside the city’s historic walls and is home to two permanent exhibits. The ‘Story of Derry’ tells the history of the city. ‘An Armada Shipwreck’ tells the story of the sinking of one of the largest ships in the Spanish Armada. The top of the Tower Museum allows visitors to take in amazing panoramic views of the area. Students taking English courses in Derry might enjoy exploring the Millennium Forum Theatre and Conference Center. This multi-purpose venue hosts a number of performances and events throughout the year, with something for everyone. The Nerve Center is another interesting venue. It is a multi-media center with in house production companies, but also houses a cinema, a coffee house and is host to the Foyle Film Festival each November. For some outdoor recreation, many locals head to the River Foyle. Visitors can enjoy boating, kayaking and fishing. Derry also has golf courses, scenic cycling routes and various parks to explore. Students residing in Derry will find that the area experiences a temperate maritime climate. This means that the area generally has cool summers and fairly warm winters. No season is considered a dry season, as precipitation occurs throughout the year.
