Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, England. This historic town is situated on the banks of the River Ouse. The town was originally a Saxon village, and the Norman built Lewes Castle still is the predominant structure in the city’s landscape. The castle’s construction was started in 1066 and continued for the next 300 years. Students enrolled in English school in Lewes will enjoy visiting both the castle, and Barbican House Museum. Be sure to climb to the top of the Castle Keep for an amazing view across Sussex. The Museum of Sussex in the Barbican House has exhibits that explore the archeological history of Sussex and the general area. The medieval town center of Lewes is another great place to explore. Its twisting streets offer a great range of shopping, antique stores and dining places. Students taking English courses in Lewes might also enjoy a visit to Harvey’s Brewery. It is the oldest brewery in Sussex, dating back to 1790. While tours of the brewery are difficult to secure (there is a long waiting list), visitors can visit the shop at the brewery to grab a souvenir or a sample of their famous ales. Be sure to visit the Lewes Farmers Market on the first Saturday of every month. It includes a great range of produce as well as cheese, meat, baked goods, jams, plants and more. Visitors should also be sure to explore the South Downs National Park, England’s newest national park. While the area has long been park land, it has only recently been designated an official National Park. It offers visitors a great place to explore the natural beauty of the area, its rivers, rolling hills and beautiful wooded areas.
