Indianapolis is the capital of the state of Indiana. It is located almost directly in the center of the state. Native Americans who first populated the area were of the Lenape and Miami tribes. The area that is now Indianapolis was named the state capital in 1820. The city was founded on the White River in hopes that this waterway would prove to be a good means of transportation, but this did not prove to be the case. Via roads and railways, however, the city did eventually become a major player in the automotive industry. It played an important role in regional transportation because of its connections to Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit and other major cities, and earned itself the nickname The Crossroads of America. Students enrolled in English school in Indianapolis might enjoy visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hall of Fame Museum, to learn about the city’s famous Indianapolis 500 and auto racing.
