Over thirty years later in the city that broadcasted those famous words, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” there is still only one word that can describe Houston, progress. The bustling city of concrete and glass is inhabited by over 5 million in the metro area and has been a hub for aerospace engineering, oil, shipping, and finance for the latter part of the twentieth-century. As a matter of fact, only New York City boasts more heads of Fortune 500 companies than Houston. From the prominent architecture to the thriving business center of the city to the strong emphasis on the arts, this cosmopolitan city of the South is the nation’s fourth-largest city with an eclectic mix of diverse ethnic groups bringing a sense of worldly access that’s enjoyed even in the intense summer heat. Students taking English courses in Houston could find in a single strip mall a Vietnamese grocery, a Venezuelan empanada stand and a big-beef meat market. The ethnic restaurant options abound and the local art scene thrives. But one can’t ignore the entertainment scene in the Space City. From the huge sports Astrodome, nicknamed the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, to the two Six Flags theme parks, to the Bayou Place, home to an entertainment complex, restaurants, movies, plazas, and parks, to the Houston Verizon Wireless Theater students attending English schools in Houston have ample amount to do outside of class and study time.
