Honolulu is the capital of the state of Hawaii located on the island of Oahu. Artifacts indicate that the area that is now Honolulu was first inhabited in the 12th century by Polynesian people. Students attending English school in Honolulu may be attracted to the area because of its tropical beaches, but should be sure to take in the many cultural attractions during their stay. The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor is a moving experience and a must see for all visitors to the area. The Hawaii State Art Museum on the 2nd floor of the capitol building is an interesting display of works by Hawaiian artists. Be sure to spend some time at the Waikiki Aquarium for the chance to see more than 500 species of plants and animals. Students taking English courses in Honolulu will find that the city is often referred to as the food capitol of the Hawaiian Islands. With everything from traditional Hawaiian dishes to a variety of other styles, there is something for every palate and every price range. Outdoor activities tend to take advantage of the setting, meaning surfing, swimming, sailing and snorkeling are very popular.
