The city of Gainesville is located in Alachua County in the state of Florida. It is located in the northern portion of the state. Gainesville is home to the University of Florida. The area itself has been inhabited for thousands of years. The city was founded in 1853. It was named for General Edmund P. Gaines who served during the Second Seminole War. The climate in the area is defined as humid subtropical. The summer months bring high humidity much like the rest of Florida. During the winter, however, it can reach lower temperatures than the rest of the peninsula because of its location. Students enrolled in English school in Gainesville will find that the city has a lot of cultural activities to offer its guests. Be sure to visit some of the historic sites like the Haile Homestead, one of the last antebellum homes in North Central Florida. One particularly unique feature of this home is that the Haile family wrote on the walls in almost every room, telling of their life, their joys and their sorrows giving a unique perspective to the history of this place.
