The city of Carbondale is located in the southern portion of the state of Illinois. It sits on the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest. It is home to the main campus of Southern Illinois University. It is said that Carbondale is the birthplace of Memorial Day as the city is credited with holding one of the first memorial observances held in honor of fallen soldiers. The General John A. Logan Museum tells the story of the man who helped establish Memorial Day as a national holiday. Students enrolled in English school in Carbondale should explore the city’s other museums as well, including the University Museum which houses art, pre-historic, historic and scientific artifacts. For some great performing arts choices, be sure to visit the Shryock Auditorium. It is located in the historic ‘old campus’ and hosts the Southern Illinois Symphony as well as other performers in theater, dance and music. Take the opportunity to visit Art Lovers Trading Company in historic Old Town to view or purchase works by local and regional artists.
