The city of Cape Girardeau is located in southeastern Missouri in the United States. It was named for a French soldier who established a trading post in the area around 1733. The city is home to Southeast Missouri State University. The town was incorporated in 1808 before Missouri became a state. It was re-incorporated as a city in 1835 and served as the largest port on the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Memphis. Students enrolled in English school in Cape Girardeau should be sure to visit the Cape River Heritage Museum which is housed in an old police and fire station dating back to 1908. The museum features a number of exhibits about the history of southeast Missouri. The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is another great excursion in town. Visit the exhibits inside, then head outdoors to walk along the two miles of nature trails. Students taking English courses in Cape Girardeau should visit the Cape Girardeau Farmer’s Market if they are in town anytime between April and November. The market offers wonderful local produce as well as baked goods, meats, plants and flowers. Throughout the year, be sure to watch for fun community events, like Tunes at Twilight during the spring and fall. These outdoor concerts feature a range of artists playing at the Common Pleas Courthouse Gazebo. The area generally experiences a continental climate with cold winters and warm, humid winters. The southeastern part of the state generally receives more precipitation than the rest of Missouri.
