Auckland, known as the City of Sails for the many yachts in its harbors, is located on the top of the North Island of New Zealand, and is the country's biggest city by population. Auckland has some very beautiful modern architecture, like the breathtaking Sky Tower, but this coastal city also originates from a very long history. Auckland was originally settled by the Māori people in the fourteenth century. Today, modern Auckland is a blend of European and Polynesian cultures, which Auckland celebrates in its festivals, art, and unity as "New Zealanders".
