English Language Center: Los Angeles Cambridge First Certificate (8 weeks) These 30-lesson-per-week courses are intensive programs limited to those students who will take the exams immediately following the courses. Both ELC locations offer 8-week and 11-week FCE and CAE Preparation Courses twice per year. Maximum class size is 12 students. All students must successfully pass a pre-test in order to participate in these courses. Students enrolled in the 8-week course join the 11-week course in progress. The First Certificate in English (FCE) is the most widely recognized proof of language ability at the upper intermediate level. The preparation program is designed to provide intensive study for the FCE examination. The FCE program is only open to students with an intermediate to advanced level of English. Upon enrollment in this course, each student will be asked to complete a pre-departure exam provided by ELC and return it to ELC. This test will allow ELC to evaluate the student’s readiness for the FCE course prior to their departure for the United States. After arriving at ELC, the student must take and pass a similar exam in order to participate in this course. Students in the FCE Course focus on all skill areas of the examination and use a variety of materials to improve their accuracy and fluency. English Language Center: Los Angeles Intensive English The Intensive English Program is a 30-lesson-per-week course which covers the full range of language skills— grammar, vocabulary, conversation, communication, listening comprehension, reading, pronunciation, and writing. All students follow the same schedule in the morning. In the afternoon, students at the beginning levels concentrate on reading and writing. English Language Center: Los Angeles Semi-Intensive Plus English The Semi-Intensive Plus Program at ELC is designed to promote communicative competence in English and consists of Sections A and B Monday through Friday, and Section C on Tuesday and Thursday. Section A is titled Grammar Structure & Usage and focuses not only on teaching students the rules for grammar usage, but also on giving students the opportunity to practice using grammar in both speaking and writing. Section B is Conversation & Listening on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and Vocabulary & Pronunciation on Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesdays and Thursday, classes run until 3.30pm while on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays classes run until 12:45pm. Students practice speaking in English and listening to and understanding English spoken by native speakers. Teachers also give feedback and special exercises to help students improve pronunciation.
